Week 4 Assignment

I need some feedback for an assignment that’s due Saturday. So please leave me a comment & let me know what you think. The assignment was to create a layout that:

1 - Unifies a selection of lines, shapes, colors, values, and directions.
2 - Demonstrates harmony, dominance, balance, proportion, unity, repetition, and contrast.

I was inspired by a painting we saw in one of the videos where the artist was explaining the various elements and principles of design. This is for a grade, so please feel free to be honest. I need to get this right.
Gracias!

Okay, I love it...I would like to see the painting that was your inspiration though. I'm such a nerd, I always examine things and look for meaning...I particularly love the scores and how the flowers and water overlap with the music. Is that something from a particular piece? Although my eye isn't necessarily trained for exactly what you're going for here, but I do have a great eye and awesome taste in art. :) I like the colors too...it's simple, but elegant, and it's one of those pieces that everybody can get something different from--and i LOVE that! So you get 2 thumbs up from me. :)

I was inspired by the fish in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmpqoG5lrxk
You have to get through about 4 minutes of his “Mona Lisa and birds” paintings before you get to the one that spoke to me!
And b/c symbolism was a big theme in this week’s readings; I started thinking about things that mean something to me. Music has always been a big part of my life. When I listen to soft, relaxing music, I always think of Fantasia and how they put so much beauty into that movie & how well it flowed with the music.
I LOVE lotus flowers which are a symbol of the sun, creation and rebirth. So I started with a yellow flower (yellow for joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.) But the fish kept coming back to me and so, I needed water for him & this is what I ended up with…many hours later. Figuring out how to draw the flower was tedious…but I found an online tutorial that help with the fishy…and, voila!

That is so awesome...I was going to say that the lotus just adds to the peace of the whole thing. So cool about the yellow flower too...and I'm with you on the music thing. That was actually the first thing I thought of, how the music relates to the rest of the picture, and even the placing of it at the top (which you may or may not have even meant to do, it was just my interpretation). I'm going to look at the video though. Like I said, great job...I look forward to seeing more!

Good choice on pulling the orange into two spots of the composition. It definitely unifies it. Also, pulling the music notes from the top of the composition through the water portion allows the eye to smoothly transition throughout your piece. Keep up the good work!

I agree with Candi, however I have one question. That is, where did the purple come from? It’s not the color palette that the rest of the embewllishments come from, and to my eye it looks out of place. I’d go with either an orange-red or even a crimson for the “other” color. Can you believe I said that about anything Purple????

Anyway, everything else is in harmony and moves smoothly. Now IF you are trying for one spot to arrest the eye, the purple makes the grade.

Mom - I know! Can't believe you're commenting on the purple. Oh well. There are several reasons why it works here. 1, yellow & purple are complimentary colors (color wheel oppotises, like orange and blue) and 2, the fishy has a purple eye. You can't tell here b/c to post this project on line, I had to bring the file size WAY down & I lost a lot of the resolution. Thanks for the tip & for helping me make sure I was following all the rules for color, harmony & balance.
